Board Advocacy

Who We Are

Our work extends beyond performances including education, community engagement, and professional development initiatives. Serving on MICHIYAYA’s Board of Directors offers an opportunity to help grow our future as a strong queer voice in New York City & Pittsburgh’s art scenes. Board members gain meaningful connections within the arts and culture ecosystem, experience with collaborative governance, and the chance to support bold artistic work in a deeply engaged community setting. This role provides hands-on leadership opportunities within a small but impactful nonprofit—ideal for individuals looking to deepen their involvement in cultural work, develop nonprofit experience, or champion artist-centered spaces.

MICHIYAYA just rounded out their 10th anniversary as a company and now we are entering a pivotal period focused on long-term sustainability and strategic growth. New board members will play a key role in strengthening the organization’s foundation as we move beyond this milestone.

MICHIYAYA is a queer-led dance company that pushes boundaries and centers the divine feminine by creating space for multidisciplinary performances and programming. Artistic Directors Anya and Mitsuko Clarke-Verdery founded MICHIYAYA Dance in 2015 as a way to combine their voices as artists—Anya, a Black queer choreographer/dance artist from Brooklyn, and Mitsuko, a white & Japanese queer visual/performance artist from Manhattan. Together we create multidisciplinary works that often recount or reveal a contemporary engagement with queerness, resistant relationships to schemes of oppression and power, cultural constraints on the body and interpersonal relationships, and other revelatory themes.
